| Despite
Mayor Livingstone's deal which lets them charge more at night (a lot more)
in exchange for an extension of the previous six-mile limit to a 12-mile
one, London's black cab drivers are still resistant to travelling south
of the river yet they keep bitching about the mini-cab operators
who do get South Londoners home after a night up west. That said, it's true that many mini-cabs are (a) dodgy vehicles (b) prone to ripping you off with the fares charged late at night. Enter Addison Lee, a company that can be relied on and which operates a several hundred strong fleet of MPV 'people carriers' - all smart and near brand new and with seven passenger seats - yet beats mini-cab prices and enables a bigger group to travel in one vehicle rather than needing two cabs. £14 one way back from Holborn to Dulwich seemed a bargain and split between seven worked out at £2 each - which was cheaper than taking the tube and bus.

Beware smooth talking British Gas sales reps who arrive on your doorstep and hustle you into buying both your gas and electricity from their company with the promise of lower prices. They might beat London Electricity on electric but for most London households will be dearer for both electricity and gas than npower who, in an average consumption situation are £38 a year cheaper than British Gas for gas. You can save another £40 a year by buying both types of power from npower and paying by monthly direct debit.
